SUMMARY: While many viewers will focus on Christian nationalism in Praying for Armageddon, the pertinent issue that the film explores, but perhaps does not articulate, is how a Christian eschatological view can influence how an individual views global conflict, the state of Israel, politics, and world events in light of Biblical prophecy.

The producers highlight Christians across America, including politicians, who adhere to dispensationalism. While neither the producers nor those interviewed mention dispensationalism, this strain of end-times theology permeates many interviewees’ worldviews.

Praying for Armageddon is an eye-opening, and oftentimes, disturbing look at the theology that fuels many Christian’s actions in the public sphere.

KEY QUOTES: “The American evangelical Christian is someone who believes every word of the Bible is literally true – like the apocalypse and the return of Jesus predicted in the book of Revelation. Every single sign and wonder that could be interpreted to make it seem like its sooner–it’s all good news to evangelical Christians. Bring it on. But there are certain verses in the book of Revelation which seem to intimate that none of this can happen unless the state of Israel exists. The American evangelical movement now says not only do we recognize this, [but] this process can be advanced by, for instance, torpedoing the peace process so the Palestinians never get their land back. The ancient borders of Israel need to be reclaimed and then Jesus will come back.”
